Collection Development

The process of recommending materials for the library is a cooperative effort involving classroom faculty and library faculty members. Indeed, the Library relies on the subject expertise of the faculty. The faculty are expected to participate in selecting library materials; they should monitor their professional literature for appropriate library acquisitions; they should be aware of the curricular needs for learning resources of their students. In addition, the Library’s faculty also select materials as part of special projects to improve and expand areas of the collections that are identified as needing improvement.

Materials purchased with library allocations funds become part of the library collections and are subject to those policies and procedures that best serve the entire academic community. All requests for the acquisition of materials will be considered in the light of the overall instructional and education purposes of Young Harris College.

The Library's Collection Development Policy, which you can consult for more information is here.

Ordering Materials

Please provide as much information as possible, especially authors, publishers and Standard Numbers, such as ISBNs. The product listings on the Amazon.Com or Barnes & Noble websites include ISBNs, ASINs, and UPCs.

If you want to request items from printed catalogs, please send the catalogs or complete photocopies of catalog pages to the library marked clearly.

Unless circumstances are unusual, the Library will hold only one copy of an item.

In the case of materials other than books and videos — for example, print periodicals, musical scores or recordings, or electronic resources of any type — please contact the Library directly.

Please allow 5–8 weeks for books to be received and 2–4 weeks for videos. If you need materials more quickly, please let us know at the time you place your order.

If you need help identifying items, please call on any member of the library's staff.

ILL for Faculty

Our collection is also a resource for faculty, but our financial resources do not allow us to collect at the Research or Comprehensive Levels which would be appropriate to faculty research needs. We will make every effort to secure needed research materials via ILL.

If you have an ILL request, please email as much information as possible to Joy L. Day or print out and complete this form, and return it to the Library.
